Milk Price Hike : Starting today, milk drinkers across the country are feeling the impact of a new price hike. From October 23, several major dairy companies have increased milk prices by ₹1 to ₹2 per litre, directly affecting the household budgets of common families. Leading brands like Amul, Mother Dairy, Jaipur Dairy, and Kolhapur’s Gokul Dairy have announced the new rates.

The key reasons behind this move are the rising cost of milk production, reduced milk yield during the summer, and the need to pay farmers better prices. During the festive season, milk demand rises sharply across India, prompting dairies to increase their procurement prices — a change that ultimately reaches consumers.

This price hike is especially evident in states like Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra.

New Milk Rates : Latest Update

Starting today, Mother Dairy has increased the prices of all its milk variants by ₹2 per litre.

These new rates are applicable in Delhi-NCR, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

Amul has also raised the prices of its main milk variants by ₹2 per litre.

  • Amul Gold: ₹67 per litre
  • Amul Standard: ₹61 per litre
  • Amul Slim & Trim: ₹25 per 500 ml

The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) stated that this increase represents an average hike of 3–4%, which remains below general food inflation levels.

In Rajasthan, Jaipur Dairy has increased the procurement price paid to dairy farmers. Under the Chief Minister Dairy Producer Support Scheme, farmers receive an additional ₹5 per litre subsidy. Jaipur Dairy has also increased consumer prices by ₹1.5 per litre, providing significant financial relief to milk producers ahead of the festive season.

Meanwhile, Gokul Dairy in Maharashtra has raised procurement prices by ₹1 per litre in the interest of farmers, a move that is also reflected in higher retail prices.

Why Have Milk Prices Increased?

The main reason for this price hike is the increased cost of milk production. High temperatures and heatwaves have affected livestock milk yield. Additionally, the cost of animal feed, electricity, water, and transportation has gone up sharply.

Mother Dairy officials stated that the procurement cost of milk has increased by ₹4–₹5 per litre in recent months, making a ₹2 price hike necessary to balance the economics.

Although the government does not directly fix milk prices, it supports dairy farmers through various schemes. For instance, Rajasthan’s Chief Minister Dairy Producer Support Scheme provides ₹5 per litre assistance to farmers to boost rural income and encourage dairy production.

States Most Affected

Urban regions such as Delhi-NCR and Ahmedabad are seeing a noticeable impact on household budgets due to the price increase. In contrast, regions like Jaipur, Kota, and Kolhapur are witnessing economic relief for farmers, as their earnings improve.

Overall, consumers may now spend ₹2–₹3 more per day, while farmers’ incomes rise correspondingly.

What About Dairy Products?

For now, there’s some relief for consumers — the prices of dairy products such as curd, paneer, and cheese have not been increased. However, experts warn that if production costs continue to rise, prices of these products may also go up in the coming weeks.

Conclusion

The new milk prices that came into effect today may cause a slight strain on household budgets, but they bring relief and stability for farmers. Industry experts say this step is crucial to maintain a stable dairy sector and strengthen the rural economy.
