Free LPG Gas Cylinders for Diwali : LPG gas cylinder prices and government schemes are extremely important topics for Indian households. Over the past few years, the price of domestic gas has changed several times, significantly affecting the budgets of common people. Today, an LPG cylinder is a basic necessity in every home, whether in urban or rural areas. To ensure a safe and clean cooking fuel, the government has been continuously launching various schemes to make LPG affordable and accessible to all.
The Government of India determines LPG prices on the first day of every month based on global crude oil prices and currency exchange rates. In recent years, due to fluctuations in the international market, both domestic and commercial cylinder prices have risen and fallen multiple times. Generally, during periods of price hikes, the government provides relief to domestic consumers through subsidies and welfare schemes.
As of September 2025, a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder in major cities like Delhi costs around ₹853. This rate has remained relatively stable over the past few months, although it sometimes fluctuates with changes in the international market. Meanwhile, the 19 kg commercial cylinder, commonly used in restaurants, hotels, and other business establishments, costs approximately ₹1,580.
In India, LPG gas is distributed mainly in two categories: Domestic (14.2 kg) and Commercial (5, 19, and 47.5 kg). Domestic cylinders are used directly in households, while commercial cylinders are used in markets, hotels, and large institutions. LPG prices are reviewed every month to ensure fair pricing for all consumers.
Government Schemes and Subsidies
To provide relief to LPG consumers, the Government of India has implemented several welfare schemes, the most prominent being the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). Under this scheme, women from poor households receive a free LPG connection, a stove, the first cylinder refill, and other necessary accessories. Launched in 2016, the Ujjwala Yojana aims to provide clean fuel access to rural households and reduce the dependence on traditional polluting fuels.
For the year 2025–26, the government has allocated ₹12,000 crore to the Ujjwala Yojana to offer a direct subsidy of up to ₹300 per LPG cylinder. This subsidy is available for up to nine cylinders per year for each beneficiary. In addition, some state governments provide two free cylinders during festive seasons and subsidized cylinders for the remaining months.
To avail of the benefits under the Ujjwala Scheme, the LPG connection must be registered in the woman’s name, linked with her Aadhaar card, and e-KYC must be completed through the gas agency.
This initiative has greatly improved the standard of living in rural areas, empowered women, and promoted a cleaner and healthier cooking environment across India.
